The Bunkbed Era has Begun

What do you do on a rainy weekend ... you put a bunkbed together, of course! After noticing that Al had been watching the severe-weather updates on the local news channel for about an hour and a half, I told him it was time to get off his duff and do something. Suggestion No. 1? Put Gabe's new bunkbed together.

An hour or so later, there it stood in all its glory: the bunkbed. Home to blanket forts, reading cubbies and Gabe's personal man-cave.

Thank goodness for the newness of the bunkbed, for it got us through a long house-bound, wet, rainy, thunderstormy weekend. The kids played in the blanket fort on the lower bunk all weekend, screeching and screaming at each other. Gabe used his camping flashlight in the darkness of the blanket enclosure so he and Ada could play with the gazillion toys they had loaded into the "fort." At nighttime, I had to read his bedtime stories by flashlight in the enclosure, and then he carefully climbed to the top where he was tucked in and warned "not to climb down until morning."

He's made it two nights in the top bunk so far without falling, crying or waking at night. Whew. Part 1 of "Mission Bed Transition" is complete. Up next? Moving Ada out of her crib and into Gabe's "old" full-size bed.

But that might have to wait a little while. I think I'm going to cry when the crib comes down ...
